Justin's Screenplay

Wide establishing Shot of Dolores Park. There's people playing fetch with their dogs, homeless people sleeping on the grass, the average hustle and bustle of park goers on a sunny day. We see MARCUS and VAN walking from a distance. Camera circles the park from above.

CUT TO:

MEDIUM SHOT of MARCUS and VAN trailing the camera as they walk through the park. We join them in mid-conversation.

MARCUS

(laughing)

Fight Club backwards is about a bunch of terrorists who after internal fighting join self help groups and get office jobs.

VAN

oh good one good one. Okay, okay let me think.

CLOSE UP: Marcus Smiling

(a beat)

MARCUS

[buzzer sound] ooow times up, took too long. Alright how about this… If you watch 'Jaws' backwards, it's a film about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they open a beach.

Van

Not bad. Hmm. Superman backwards is about a guy who flies around putting people into precarious situations and then hiding.

MARCUS

Friday the 13th backwards is about a magic hockey player who heals a bunch of injured teens so they can go home from camp.

VAN

Now that- Sounds even better than the original.

CLOSE UP: Van, enamored and smiling

Cut To: Close up on Marcus

MARCUS studies VAN's face. Scene ends with them looking at each other.

Exit Dolores Park Evening

Wide shot: The sun is setting. MARCUS and VAN sit side by side on their backs against the incline of a hill.

MARCUS

What are you doing Saturday?

VAN

Another round of the good 'ol SAT. My parents have been riding me to break into the 2200's. Totally ridiculous. They've got me applying to 20 different schools, its insane. "Sew some wild oats" my dad says, "you never know." Easy for him to say he's not filling out the apps.

MARCUS

Yeah, just preparing you for a future in plastics. Can't believe it though, senior year. Comin' to the last lap, you know.

VAN

I know, College keeps creepin' closer and closer.

MARCUS

absolutely terrifying.

(a beat)

VAN

You know, I'm gonna miss you next year. Miss this.

( a beat)

VAN leans in close to Marcus. Marcus is visibly uncomfortable. The ambient noise level seems to dim.

VAN

What's wrong?

MARCUS

Sorry. I…I just keep thinking about what my dad said the other night. "Being pulled over and questioned? I'd consider it my duty." All that, it's bullshit. If you pulled my dad over and made him prove he wasn't a child molesting, drug-dealing terrorist? I mean, he'd go berserk. He'd go off the rails-totally lose his shit. He hates being put on hold when he calls about his credit card bill. I mean, being locked in the back of a car and questioned for an hour would give him a fucking aneurysm… We could fix it though. Teach him a lesson.

CLOSE UP on Van, staring blankly back at him.

Marcus (cont.)

It's the arphid cloners. They're totally easy to make. Just flash the firmware on a ten dollar Radio Shack reader/writer and you're done. What we do is go around and randomly swap the tags on people, overwriting their Fast Passes and FasTraks with other people's codes. That'll make everyone skew all weird and screwy. Make everyone look guilty. Then: total gridlock.

VAN

Jesus, Marcus listen to yourself.

MARCUS

What?

VAN stands up and walks hurriedly away, MARCUS rushes to follows her, running into a passerby and falling over. He scrambles back to his feet and continues his pursuit.

VAN

Can't we hang out once without you going into you're whole "down with the establishment routine." I mean, fuck! Is there anything in life you don't want to violently rebel against?

MARCUS

I just…

VAN

How long are you gonna do this for? This whole crusade, how long is it going to last?

MARCUS

Vanessa, I know. I know. I get scared sometimes too, but…

VAN

I don't get scared "sometimes." I'm scared all the time. I'm so scared that sometimes, I don't want to get out of bed. I've been scared since the minute the explosions happened and I'm scared now, cause I think you're going to spend the rest of your life tilting at windmills.

MARCUS

So that's it you're done?

VAN

I can't keep living my life like this. Things are worse than they were before, I'll admit that but shit happens.

MARCUS

Darryl…

VAN

Shit happens and you move on. You don't dwell on it forever. I may be tracked wherever I go, but I can still be happy, feel fulfilled. feel loved.

(a beat)

MARCUS

Van, I'm not the problem, they are. I'm not arresting people, jailing them, making them disappear. The Department of Homeland Security are the ones doing that. I'm fighting back to make them stop.

VAN

Marcus, I love you but you need to wake up. Give me a call when you do.

VAN exits. MARCUS is left alone and sits down there to reflect for a moment. When a HOMELESS BOXMAN sits down by him.

HOMELESS BOXMAN

Rene Descartes is eating at a restaurant. The waiter asks him if he'd like french fries with his meal. Rene replies "I think not.." and disappears.

MARCUS looks at him, puzzled.
